To the cameraman – please make a police report as this is a criminal offence under the Postal Services Act.
34.—(1) Any officer, employee or agent of a postal licensee (i.e. Singpost) who —
(a) destroys or throws away any postal article or anything contained therein;
52.— … fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or to both
Cameraman: Your boss did not tell you to deliver this stack? Yes or No?
Postman: No no…but we have to ask- (interrupted)
Cameraman: Okay call your boss.
Postman: I don’t have his number.
Cameraman: Forever cannot find people is it?
Postman: Can find can find…
Cameraman: Someone must be responsible. Be more cooperative. Stop lying. If you lie, admit it.
Postman: Yes yes yes…
Cameraman: If someone asks you to deliver and you misplace it (letters) be more honest and admit. If you don’t admit I will slowly one by one go and dig out. Entire Singpost knows of my problem. I will not let this matter rest. I must know what happened to my papers. To you it is an insignificant piece of paper, but to me it is very important.
Postman: Yes yes I know
Camerman:You come to Singapore to work and we welcome you with open arms. Don’t take it for granted and destroy Singpost reputation because of one person. You understand?
Postman: This problem… I say you probably won’t believe. I come from China fo work. It’s not that we anyhow throw or we are irresponsible. I (inaudible) 2600 per week… (inaudible) Malays are lesser (???) They treat people from China unfairly… (trails off) I actually wanted to go to the doctors because my leg is hurt. So I… (interrupted)
Cameraman: So you nice nice throw away all these into the trash.
Postman: I… is just this block only. The others I really- (interrupted)
Cameraman: Who is the culprit? Is it you? Or is it the customer?
Postman:Me. Yes I know.
Cameraman: So people bully (mistreat) you, you bully (mistreat) others. Passing (mistreatment/injustice) from one to another.
Postman: He really treats me unfairly. Keep asking me to work overtime. Everyday they give $120. I already have trouble keeping up with the workload they still ask me to work overtime. What can I do? Also working overtime does not give extra pay. He really treats me unfairly… I am very tired…
Camerman: He treats you unfairly, is his fault. But am I unfair to you?
Postman: Yes you are not in the fault… Perhaps in my heart I- (interrupted)
Cameraman: On the 5th you are supposed to complete (the job), today is the 7th. I gave you 2 more days. I ask you open all the mailbox and I did not see any of my flyers. Not even one. I now ask you open (mailboxes of) Block 72, 29, 31 have or not? Confirm don’t have.
Postman: Wherever they (flyers) are distributed and wherever they are not I know.
Cameraman: You know how much money I spent? Few thousand. People bully (mistreat) you, I sympathize with you. But you don’t have to bully (mistreat) me.
Postman: I did not bully (mistreat) you…(inaudible) I did not know that this block don’t have… If i knew I would have delivered… (???) These flyers are easy to deliver… I really let you down… (inaudible) Anyway if you sue me, I have a plane on Friday. I will not come back. If not for this incident I might return… (to Singapore) Just that simple.
Yes,the postman was wrong for dumping the letters…But we must also acknowledge the drive behind his selfishness…Anyone please tell me.If your employer orders YOU to do overtime FOR FREE,you will not get O.T. pay, will you do it?Were you taught that,if the Boss will not pay you O.T., you have the rights to insist tomorrow then settle?I know I was. We,as Singaporeans, can say “there’s the Ministry of Manpower”, but do you think the foreigners know the existence of the M.O.M.? I doubt so…I believe all employers would love to have the M.O.M. disappear,so that they,as the Boss, can order their employees to do ANYTHING they want. How about working 16 hours straight, get paid the standard 8 hrs?Or maybe going to the employer’s house to help him/her do housework?Or even set up the new Play Station for his/her son as a reward for doing well in his exam. Many employers will jump on the chance to exploit their workers.I know 1 of them, until I offered to assist the exploited to approach the M.O.M. if things got real in a big company I was in.So before jumping the gun on the “Ah Tiong” we hate so much, know that someone up there might have drove them to do so.If not,who in their right mind will do something that will compromise their fat paycheck?
In the video I can tell that he might be feeling bad for being caught. He is not doing any defensive through word nor action even if he is being filmed on camera.Everything happen for a reason. If we want to solve a severe problem, we need to look into the root cause.
First, from what I know is that their basic pay is around $1200. So they will all depend on their OT pay heavily.
Second, their work load normally DOUBLES ( like from 2000 boxes to 4000 boxes ) then might be considered as OT. By getting 2000 boxes more, they gets around 5-6 hours of OT pay at the end of the month. $1245 per month inclusive of OT??? ( they should be working same shift as office, 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week, 160++hours/month. By getting the highest possible pay/hour is #$7.5# which is total $37.5~$45 worth OT pay per month. )
Thirdly, through his words you are able to tell that he did find ways to “fight” back a little. Like asking for off days or MC if possible to treat his leg. Of course if it worked, he will not have did this.
I’m sure they will be happy to get this amount of work load IF they were paid what they are supposed to get.
I mean that is the whole point for foreign workers coming all the way to Singapore to work right?
Who do not wish to stay with their family?
Who do not wish to be respected?
Who will wish to be film by a camera right in the face and posted on to the social medial to let people scold him?
Dear Singapore friends, we are all well educated people that will think before we voice out our opinion. For the people insulting people base on their nationality or race, you know deeply in your heart it is not the right thing to do. People will appreciate if you of being able to come out with a solution. If you are just sitting there complaining and blaming others will only helps in enhancing this image of Singaporean globally.
For the uploader, I’m not sure if you are the cameraman in the video?
I really want to say to the cameraman that, it’s very nice of you still being able to talk peaceful to him despite the fact that you might be really angry of his actions. Irregardless if it is intentionally or not, the postman’s explanation was kept in this video. Not sure if it will help, but the information from the postman might give us a chance to know the root problem of signpost’s poor service. If not at least will give a lesson.
However there is one thing I will appreciate more if you were cautious enough to cut his face off from appearing in the video.
Not only it is not nice of you showing his facing to the whole world as it is disrespectful to him, and also it is a portraiture right issue.
