I started as a junior analyst at a fintech firm in Jurong two years ago. My starting salary was S$2,800 and the contract said a review after twelve months.
When the first review came I was told the company was tight on cash and my salary would stay the same. I accepted because I liked the team and the location.
Six months later the boss announced a team reward for the sales department. He handed a sealed envelope to my colleague who is also his university friend. Inside was a cash bonus of S$5,000.
I asked around and learned that the bonus was for closing a deal that the friend had led. The same deal was recorded as a team effort, but only he got the money.
The next month my performance score was marked needs improvement and my raise request was denied. Meanwhile the friend’s salary jumped from S$3,200 to S$4,500 overnight.
I tried to raise the issue in a one on one meeting, but the boss brushed me off, saying the numbers speak for themselves. He also reminded me that loyalty to the team matters.
I now feel stuck. My workload has increased, the bonus money never came, and I see my peers being promoted for the same work. I have saved enough to cover rent for a few months, but quitting means losing the stability I have.
