I moved in with my girlfriend two years ago. We both work long hours in Jurong and decided to eat healthier together.
She made a rule: no one can use the shared kitchen fridge after 9pm. She said it would stop late night junk food binges.
At first I thought it was fine. I even started meal prepping on Sundays.
A few weeks later I noticed the fridge was always half empty. My leftovers vanished and the veggies I bought were gone.
I asked her why, and she said she ate them early because she was hungry. I shrugged it off.
One night I came home late from work, exhausted, and wanted a quick snack. The fridge was locked with a padlock she put on the door.
I tried to open it, but the lock wouldn’t budge. I remembered the spare key was in the kitchen drawer.
When I opened the drawer, I found a small mini fridge tucked behind the pantry shelf. It was humming quietly.
Inside were packs of chips, chocolate bars, instant noodles, and a whole bottle of soda.
I felt a mix of anger and betrayal. She had banned me from the main fridge, yet she kept a secret stash just for herself.
I confronted her the next morning. She laughed and said she needed “her own comfort food” after stressful days.
She argued that the rule was only for me because I was the one trying to lose weight, and she didn’t have to follow it.
I felt hypocritical and hurt. The whole idea of us sharing responsibilities felt broken.
Now I’m stuck deciding whether to accept her double standard or to move out.
Do I stay and try to renegotiate the rules, or do I leave because trust has already been broken
