I have been a marketing executive at a mid size firm in Jurong for three years.
Last month we finally closed a big client that would bring in S$500,000 of revenue.
Our team worked overtime for weeks, and each of us was promised a S$300 performance bonus.
On the day we were supposed to receive the bonuses, our manager called a sudden meeting.
He announced that his daughter was getting married next week and that the company would sponsor part of the ceremony.
He then demanded that every staff member hand over their S$300 bonus to cover the wedding costs, calling it a "family emergency" and urging us to be grateful for the opportunity.
Most of us felt uneasy but didn’t want to clash with him, so we reluctantly signed the hand over forms.
The next day, the senior director emailed praising the team for "exceptional work" on the new client and announced that the project would be presented at the upcoming industry conference.
When the conference day arrived, the manager took the stage alone, delivering the entire presentation and claiming he had personally secured the client and led the strategy.
Behind the scenes I saw a colleague whisper that the manager had edited the slides to remove all our names.
After the conference, the senior director sent a congratulatory note to the manager, mentioning his "visionary leadership".
Meanwhile, we never saw the S$300 bonuses we had given up.
I asked HR about the missing money, and they said the bonuses were "re allocated to a company event".
When I confronted the manager, he brushed it off, saying he was doing a favour for his family and that we should be happy to help.
Now the whole team feels demoralised, and the promise of a bonus feels like a lie.
I am considering filing a formal complaint, but I fear retaliation and being labelled a troublemaker.
Should I risk my job by reporting the manager, or just accept the loss and move on
Would you stay in a job after finding out you were being treated like this?
