My girlfriend and I have been saving up for our first BTO flat together for over two years now. Every time we go out for meals, she makes it a point to remind me how expensive everything is nowadays. She insists that we need to cut back on all unnecessary spending so we can build a solid down payment.
I actually agreed with her because buying a home in Singapore is no small matter. She constantly lectures me about my occasional weekend coffees and casual gaming purchases, telling me I lack financial discipline. Whenever I bought anything above S$50, she would cross examine me about whether it was truly essential for our future.
Because of this, I started being extremely mindful of my own wallet. I cut down my personal expenses to the absolute minimum and transferred every extra dollar straight into our shared savings account. But lately, I noticed that her contributions to our joint account did not match her usual salary scale.
Whenever I brought it up, she claimed she had urgent family medical bills to settle. I felt bad and dropped the subject immediately. The real shock came last weekend when I needed to use her laptop to check a movie timing while she was in the bathroom.
Her browser was still logged into an online shopping portal. Curiosity got the better of me when I saw a notification pop up on the screen. It was a shipping confirmation for a leather pet carrier.
I clicked into her purchase history and my jaw dropped. For the past six months, she has been spending around S$1,500 every single month on luxury designer collars, custom gourmet treats, and branded apparel for her cat. She was scolding me for spending S$6 on iced coffee while secretly funding a lifestyle for her pet that costs more than my monthly food budget.
When I confronted her about it later that evening, she got defensive and said her cat deserves the best and that her personal spending is none of my business. Now I am sitting here staring at our joint savings balance wondering how we are ever going to trust each other with a housing loan.
Would you call off a BTO application if your partner hid thousands of dollars in luxury pet spending while policing your every cent
What would you do if your partner hid something this important from you?
