I met my boyfriend at a hawker stall in Jurong for what we called a first date. The food was good and the conversation flowed.
Mid way through we heard a familiar voice. His ex, who I had never met, walked over and sat at the next table.
My boyfriend tried to be polite, introducing us, but the tension was obvious. I could feel the whole stall watching.
He kept glancing at his phone, texting quickly. I asked if everything was okay and he said it was just a friendly catch up.
After we left, we walked to the MRT. He seemed distracted, fidgeting with his bag.
When I reached for his hand, my fingers brushed a folded piece of paper inside his pocket.
It was a rent notice addressed to him, stating S$600 was overdue for his HDB flat.
I asked why he was carrying it. He stammered, said he had forgotten to give it to his landlord.
But I had just seen him hide it during our date, and the timing with his ex made me wonder what else he was keeping secret.
He tried to laugh it off, saying it was a small issue and he would sort it tomorrow.
I left the MRT station feeling uneasy. The excitement of the night turned into doubt.
Now I am stuck wondering if I should keep dating someone who hides financial trouble on a first date, or if I should end it before things get deeper.
Should I confront him about the rent notice and ask why he hid it, or just walk away before any more surprises
What would you do if your partner hid something this important from you?
